Chaperon Assistance - Thank you!
There are a thousand things I'm grateful for at Creek, and that's truly a conservative estimate. Near the top, however, is parental involvement. Whether it's being supportive of your students' efforts in and out of class, the opportunity to team with you to make sure that students have a good educational experience that preserves their passion for learning, or hands-on help running student events, you've been there for me at every turn, and I can't thank you enough. This page is a clearinghouse of items to help make things easier for all of us.
8/26 and 12/16, Ice Cream Social and Saturnalia: I may need some help serving and cleaning, depending on the number of students who attend.
9/10, Forum I: I need help running breakfast and snacks and serving lunch; I also need adult supervision during the Olympika. In addition, if you have expertise in any area of classical study (mythology, history, literature, customs, art and architecture, or any other specialized area), I would love your help in the academic area workshops. If you know how to sew or are comfortable wrapping and decorating togas and stolas, we could use more help supervising students in the sewing room. Finally, it's always helpful to have an extra set of eyes check the auditorium and classrooms to make certain we leave all areas in the condition we found them.
9/19, 10/21, and 3/9 Car Wash I: We approved this year to offer three car washes, on-site at SCHS on faculty work days. The theory is that teachers, faculty, staff, and anyone else on campus may sign up to have a car washed, and come out at the end of the day to a clean, fresh-smelling car. I will need an adult supervising for each 4-8 students, as well as donations of buckets, soap, air-fresheners, squeegees, towels, and hoses. I am hoping to use this both as a service for faculty, and as a fundraiser to bolster our Awards ceremony and other support of student activities.
11/5, Forum II: Again, I need help with breakfast, snacks, and lunch. Also, if you have a arts and crafts, writing, or public speaking background, I can really use your help critiquing creative projects. This is also the first year we are running the mock-dig, so I do need help with oversight of student groups and the posting of each group's results.
1/28/17, Regional Forum. I need a strong parent presence at this event. Since there are only half a dozen Latin teachers in Brevard and Volusia Counties, the areas that compete here, there are many areas where help is needed. In addition to tracking a group of ten children, and making sure they are all on the bus in proper order both when we depart for the event and when we return, we need help proctoring the testing session, scoring projects, timing and keeping score during certamen matches, overseeing the Olympika, which Spruce Creek students run, and/or helping move students in and out during the speech competitions. After we have registered, I will be told where each of us is to work, and be able to provide you with more information about the work.
3/26, World Languages Festival. I am changing our students' participation level and opportunities at this event and will need help accordingly. As in years past, we will offer the Olympika, and I will need one or more adults to be resources for the students running the event. We will also have a "Day in the Underworld" event in F06, and I will need your assistance monitoring that room, as students will also have speeches to deliver. Finally, I will need an adult to stay with students selling food and any goods they choose to sell in the atrium from 10-1-ish.
4/5-4/8, State Latin Forum. At this competition I will need no more than two or three chaperons, as only twenty-five students from Creek may attend each year. As at Regionals, there are many specific jobs which vary from patrolling the hotel grounds to proctoring tests, and we will find out our assignments after we register and the needed positions have been assigned to the available adults. Unlike Regional Forum, chaperons, unless we specify that they are experts in an art medium, are not normally asked to judge creative projects. Overall, making certain that students are in before curfew, fed, dressed and behaving appropriately, and never in the rooms of members of the opposite sex will take up most of our chaperons' time. We may either drive or take a bus to this event. Especially if we have a full team, it is much better for us as adults to take a bus. You can watch a video with more details about State Forum rules and chaperon duties here.
Late July, National Forum. At this point, making sure students have studied over the summer and packed appropriately is enough. If we have to fly out, we may need help getting to the Orlando airport. If we are taking the traditional "Florida Bus'o'Fun," we simply need to appear at the pick-up point with students ready to go. Please email me if you are interested in attending.

Why? What does this get my child?
While all foreign languages reflect upon a candidate's ability and willingness to adapt to a global economy and speak to a linguistic facility beyond that of other high school students, the study of Latin by itself impresses college admissions counselors. Enrollment and excellence in a competitive Latin program affiliated with the Junior Classical League indicate that the candidates are the best of the best, willing to work hard, pay close attention to detail, pursue knowledge for its own sake, and think logically to solve problems. Their language skills are measurably higher, Colleges generally know who and what the JCL and NLE are, so your students' investments of time, effort, and money will carry weight to help them accomplish whatever they wish to accomplish.
In addition, the Florida Junior Classical League, National Junior Classical League, National Latin Honor Society, and National Latin Exam offer scholarships to deserving senior Latin students. Latin is an investment in your child's future, and I will do everything in my power to make this course valuable to them and to you. Take a look at the heights all these people reached after studying Latin - who knows where today's students will go! The sky's the limit - we will watch them soar together.
